What is a Forge server?
Forge is the oldest and by far the most widely used modloader for Minecraft Java. If you want to play real content mods – new items, machines, magic systems, dimensions, mobs – you need a Forge server in most cases. Virtually all major modpacks like All The Mods, Feed The Beast, RLCraft, SkyFactory and Hexxit are based on Forge.
The difference from plugins: Mods change the game on a fundamental level. They can add new blocks, crafting recipes, mobs and entire game mechanics – while plugins (as on Spigot/Paper) can only hook into existing game mechanics. Mods must be installed on both the server and the players' clients.
